THE STORY OF IDOLI

ON LAPLAND’S TERMS

Lapland is as worthy of global recognition as Finland itself. This unique attraction and landscape has been in desperate need of far-spanning attention and new, high quality, innovations and services to tourism. We established the design house of IDOLI on the legendary shores of Lake Inari in 2005 as our own contribution to meet this ever-growing need.

THE RECIPE FOR EXPERIENCE

HIGH QUALITY FINNISH ART, DESIGN, AND GOURMET FOOD ARE THE BEDROCK OF OUR OPERATIONS IN ADDITION TO THE EXPANSIVE WILDERNESS OF LAPLAND

Finnish design

The showcase of Finnish design at Design House IDOLI has been carried out over the years through five variously themed exhibitions. Almost all of the major contemporary Finnish designers and producers have been featured in cooperation with iconic design companies, Fiskars/Iittala, Artek, Woodnotes and Marimekko, as well as previously with Nokia. This exhibition, illuminated by the impressive, natural, wilderness, has opened a window to fine, Finnish design for our valued guests: thousands of international travellers, businesses, as well as countless media representatives from all over the world.

While upgrading our concept, we thought about beautiful things. We believe that beauty should be cherished in all its manifestations. We will continue to advocate for this message through Design House IDOLI, creating delicious, gourmet food from the yields of the Arctic nature and ensuring a commitment to fabulous Finnish artists and topical, interesting art.

THE ROAD TO DESIGN IN THE WILDERNESS

How on earth did a top design house and exclusive restaurant rise from the Northern wilderness?

Design House IDOLI all started about twenty years ago when my wife Hanneli and I met in Helsinki and fell in love. Almost from that very moment, we started looking for a place in northern Lapland where we could spend a year’s sabbatical and forget the busy pace of life in the south. We found an old lumberjack’s cabin on the shore of Lake Inari and, with a bit of work, turned it into a home.

Pekka and Hanneli Sillfors designed a studio to showcase top Finnish design beside their home on the shore of a lake in the middle of the wilderness.

“During that “year out” we realised that we wanted to stay in Lapland permanently. We started to brainstorm ideas for a top Finnish design exhibition in the middle of the wilderness. We designed a studio next door to our home, reached via a plank walk across the marsh, in which we could show visitors to Lapland something of the impact that the far north has had on modern culture.”

SMITTEN WITH LAPLAND

Hanneli & Pekka Sillfors
We, Hanneli and Pekka Sillfors, are life-long adventurers who have lived in northern Lapland for over 30 years. Hanneli’s professional background is in Fashion, and Pekka’s in marketing communications.

Finnish design and art, the ineffable beauty of northern nature, and the processing of raw materials in Arctic gourmet experiences inspire and motivate us. With respect and love demonstrated towards our inspirations, we developed the design house of IDOLI and the “Gourmet Gallery” concept.

We extend to you a warm welcome!
